Wahida C. Valiante is a founding member and former National President of the Canadian Islamic Congress (CIC). She is also a founding member and past National Chair of Islamic History Month Canada, a national Annual Educational and Cultural project, proclaimed by Canadian Parliament in 2007.
Wahida’s professional background is in social work specializing in family therapy. She holds a BA (psychology), BSW (Hon) from York University, and MSW from the University of Toronto as well as a diploma in family mediation. She is trained in Brief Solution Focused Therapy; Domestic Violence and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder; Trauma, Loss and Grief.
She has made numerous presentations and training to academic institutions and professional, both nationally and internationally, on the development of human personality and the role of religion and family. She has presented several major papers on contemporary theories of family therapy and towards the development of an alternative model of treatment based on the Qur'anic concept of human psyche.
She recently published her first book “A Mosaic of Thoughts,” a topical anthology covering a wide spectrum of social justice, politics,human rights, Muslim family and inter-cultural issues in Canada.
In 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013/2014 she has been named one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world, edited by John Esposito and Ibrahim Kalin, Islamic Studies scholars at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
In 2012, she was named in the "100 Extraordinary Muslim Women Past and Present" by Women Islamic Initiative in Spirituality and Equality (WISE Muslim Women)
